Yet Another Friday Night… lol…

Shanghai, Băoshān lù (宝山路), 1983
have attempted to identify the locations of 1983 street scenes in Shanghai using a 1983 street map, sketches of the trolleybus overhead system that I made … and a magnifier, so that I can see the trolleybus line number. This identification is sometimes “easy,” sometimes “difficult.”
The trolleybus in the photo is working Line 18. I believe that the direction of travel is southward.
The location appears to be in 宝山路, Băoshān lù, just north of 上海北站, Shànghăi bĕizhàn (Shanghai North Station).
1983 October 4.

Shanghai, Hénán bĕilù (河南北路) at Tiānmù dōnglù (天目东路) – 1, 1983
The trolleybus is working Line 13. I believe that the direction of travel is (generally) westward.
The location is mere guesswork, based on the trolleybus overhead wire system. However, I believe that the vehicle is turning out of 河南北路, Hénán bĕilù, into 天目东路, Tiānmù dōnglù. This location was near Shànghăi bĕizhàn (Shanghai North Station).

Shanghai, Hénán bĕilù (河南北路) at Tiānmù dōnglù (天目东路) – 2, 1983
The trolleybus is working Line 18. I believe that the direction of travel is (generally) southward.
I believe that the vehicle is turning out of 河南北路, Hénán bĕilù, into 天目东路, Tiānmù dōnglù. This location was near Shànghăi bĕizhàn (Shanghai North Station).
The orange-and-white livery was unusual. “Most” Shanghai trolleybuses were painted light blue and white (or ivory).

Shanghai, Wŭjìn lù (武进路) at Hénán bĕilù (河南北路), 1983
The trolleybus is working Line 14. I believe that the direction of travel is (generally) southward.
The location is, again, mere guesswork, based on the trolleybus overhead wire system. However, I believe that the vehicle is turning out of 武进路, Wŭjìn lù, into 河南北路, Hénán bĕilù. This location was near Shànghăi bĕizhàn (Shanghai North Station).

Shanghai, Wŭjìn lù (武进路) 1983
The trolleybus in the background is working Line 14. I believe that the direction of travel is generally southward.
The people (and the trolleybus) are facing almost directly into the sun. The time of day was late afternoon. This suggests that the camera was facing eastward.
Again, a mere guess … but I believe that the location is in 武进路, Wŭjìn lù, “possibly” east of 四川北路, Sìchuān bĕilù.
Location was almost certainly “not far” from 上海北站, Shànghăi bĕizhàn (Shanghai North Station). At this time, I was working “diligently,” taking notes on the trolleybus overhead wire system. I would have explored the immediate area by foot, taking notes about trolleybus overhead, before traveling to another part of Shanghai.

Shanghai, Jiāngwān wŭjiăocháng (江湾五角场), 1983
After exploring trolleybus Line 14, I “probably” returned to the area near Shànghăi bĕizhàn (Shanghai North Station).
My street map showed that two trolleybus lines, 18 and 21, extended north to a terminal named Hóngkŏu gōngyuán.
Imagine my interest when I arrived at this terminal, and found a trolleybus line, number 9, that was not on the map (!).
The “outer” terminal of Line 9 was named Jiāngwān wŭjiăocháng. This was located in 邯郸路, Hándān lù, at 宁国路, Níngguó lù.
… and, imagine my interest when I arrived here, and found a trolleybus line under construction, extending southward in 宁国路, Níngguó lù (!).
This image is in 邯郸路, Hándān lù, just west of 宁国路, Níngguó lù. Jiāngwān wŭjiăocháng, terminal of trolleybus Line 9 is visible in the background.
Time of day was late afternoon.
I remember that I did not stop making notes about trolleybus overhead wires, in northeastern Shanghai, until after midnight (!!).
I was questioned, briefly, by a plainclothes policeman during the “late” hours. I saw several men who looked like “plainclothes policeman,” so I was obviously not the primary subject of interest. This “sweep” was probably part of China\\\\’s (then-) ongoing crackdown on crime. The policeman asked why I did not have a hotel, and I was able to explain, in very simple “Putonghua,” that I planned to take a “night train” to Hangzhou. (I might even have had the ticket.) He appeared satisfied, and left.

Shanghai North station (上海北站), 1983
Diesel locomotive ND2 0174, built by Electroputere, Craiova, Romania.
Location is at 上海北站, Shànghăi bĕizhàn, “Shanghai North Station.”
Most of the people on the footbridge were just standing there, as if watching trains – or perhaps even “spotting trains.” I also saw this in Xi\\\\’an.

Illuminations, National Day, Shanghai, 1983
The historic buildings along 中山路, Zhōngshān lù (“The Bund”) were illuminated in outline on the night of National Day, October 1.
The crowd became ever more excited as each building was lighted, one at a time. An English-speaking man explained that this sight could be seen only on National Day.

Zhàndòu (战斗) 77, U.S.-built cargo ship, Shanghai, 1983
Another view of 战斗77, Zhàndòu 77, which was built by Butler Shipbuilding, Superior, Wisconsin, U.S., in 1943.
1983 October 12.

U.S.-built cargo ship, Shanghai, 1983
战斗77, Zhàndòu 77, was built by Butler Shipbuilding, Superior, Wisconsin, U.S., in 1943.
The original name of this vessel was “Elkanah Crowell.”
I believe that the ship was named for (Captain) Elkanah Crowell (1793-1885), who was a Massachusetts (U.S.) merchant ship captain.
Zhàndòu,means “fight” or “battle.” This series of ships was later renamed as the 和平, Hépíng, series, “Hépíng” means “peace.”
